For those seeking an alternative to a nursing/residential home there may be various forms of funding available to help. These methods can indeed help individuals and their families with the costs of Live-In Care.
The Government provides financial assistance, advice and other forms of funding support to most elderly, sick or disabled people who need help with their personal care and/or nursing. Below is a list of the most common methods of funding care, useful phone numbers and links to informative websites that we hope may be able to help.
Private Funding
You can of course pay for any care you wish to receive (for yourself or a family member) privately without having to complete any government forms.
Direct Payments and Self Directed Support (SDS)
The newly developed government initiative – Self Directed Support (SDS) (which allows an individual absolute freedom of choice with regard to the type of care they wish to have, who provides it, and where it is) is leading to a sharp increase in the demand for Live-In Care.
Attendance Allowance
Attendance Allowance is a tax free benefit for people over the age of 65 who need help with personal care such as getting in and out of bed, washing, eating, medication or mobility; or because they can become confused and need someone to watch over them.

Carer's Allowance
Carers Allowance is a taxable benefit for people (such as a friend or family member) who look after someone who already receives an Attendance Allowance or a Disability Livings Allowance. Extra expenses may be claimed for paying a third party to provide care while you are out of the house.

You may be entitled to a Disability Living Allowance if:

Your disability is severe enough for you to need help caring for yourself
You have walking difficulties
You are under 65 when you claim
Continuing NHS Health Care
Those people with a 'complex medical condition that requires a lot of care and support, and/or very specialist nursing support' are entitled to receive financial help "in any setting" – including your own home from the NHS. It is intended to cover the entire costs of care including all medical care and nursing care. Telephone NHS Direct on 0845 4647 ask for details of your local Patient Advise and Liaison service – PALS.
